CORNELL SPRING GARDENING SCHOOL 2009 BLOOMS!

Riverhead Middle School, was the location for the first of three dates of Cornell's annual Spring Gardening School. A good time was had by all attendees,volunteers and Master Gardeners.

Breakfeast in the cafateria,at Riverhead High School, first classes starts at 9am.

Laurie Donnelly, prepares a container that will be raffled off to raise money for Cornell. Laurie is a Master Gardener volunteer and will be teaching a class on Container Gardening with Master GardenerJay Wolstoff.

Jim & Eileen Prezorski are the caretakers at the plant nursery.They

 watch over plants,while their owners  are attending classes.

Alice, standing behind her lap top, starts teaching her class on orchids. Alice also taught a class in the morning on Floral Arranging. Alice is the plant horticuluralist who answers the publics plant questions and inquiries at  Cornell Extension Center in Riverhead and at Bayard arboridum in Islip. If you need help with a plant call Alice!

The container, to be raffled off, waits in the hallway, it will be used as a teaching tool in the Container Gardening class. Harry Laurder in bloom(walking stick plant) is the thriller in the container.

Plants are raffled as a fund raiser to benefit Cornell Coperative Extension Educational programs.

Caroline Kiang congratulates the winner  of the container raffle who, displays her winning ticket.It just so happens she drove her husbands truck today, so she will have no problem getting her prize home! The winner is also a Master Gardener who volunteered her help for the day.

Betty Baron is the Master Soil Tester, test soil samples that were brought in from attendee gardens.The first step to beautiful gardens is to know your soil pH. You can get your soil tested at Cornell Cooperative extension in Islip and Riverhead for a small fee.There are two test available, basic pH and a more eloborate test for your soils nutrients. Basic pH should be done every year.

Laurie Donnelly, Master Gardener, makes sure the plant tags are attached to each plant in the container. Reading your plant label is very important to sustain a eco friendly container planting.  

Master Gardener volunteers display the plants that will be offered for sale. Their attention to detail is makes  a outstanding spring garden  display!

At the e nd of the day all attendees gather in the cafateria for the raffle. If you hand in a class  evaluation you get a free raffle ticket.Two large container planters were designed by Laurie Donnelly and Jay Wolstoff and will be raffled off. The containers were used as a teaching tool in their Container Gardening Class.
