Hibiscus is pictured on front of card.... I am a flowering plant in the Mallow family, malvaceae and a native to warm, sub-tropical and tropical regions throughout the world. Like you, I thrive with full sun and some shade and temperatures between 60 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, so I make a great indoor plant. I grow well in soil that is rich in organic matter and compost, with a fertilizer that is high in potassium to aid my growth and keep my metabolism healthy. I like regular watering, but I don’t like being over-watered or left with “wet feet.”
I have many brothers and sisters that can grow as annuals or perennials with herbaceous characteristics (meaning my stems die down to the soil level at the end of the growing season), although some of us can grow into woody shrubs or small trees. I have large, showy flowers that attract butterflies and bees.
Member of my species are used to make Hibiscus tea, paper, and jellies and jams. A 2008 USDA study confirmed that Hibiscus tea lowers blood pressure, and people all over the world have used me for medicinal purposes. I have over 200 family members with almost 2300 species.
Dahlia I am a plant that comes in a variety of sizes. I can range in height from 6 inches to twenty feet, and my flowers can be as small as a quarter or as large as a dinner plate! My beautiful and complex composite flowers are made up of long ray florets, central disc flowers, and delicate bracts. I can be grown from tubers (the most popular method), cuttings or seeds. Here on Long Island, you would plant my tubers around May 15 th , spaced about 2 to 3 feet apart and at a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Be prepared to support me with stakes and ties to prevent my flowers from being damaged.
When I am about 12 inches high, my tip should be pinched. This is called “topping” or “stopping” and it causes the development of side canes or laterals. I do well in soil that is rich in phosphorous and potash and poor in nitrogen. I need regular doses of insecticide or I will become host to red spider mites, corn borers, aphids, Japanese beetles, and green leafhoppers. Alstroemeria Although my formal name is Alstroemeria, my common name is Peruvian Lilly or Lilly of the Incas, and you can call me Ulster Mary. I was given my Latin name in 1753 by Carolus Linnaeus, who named me after his fellow Swedish botanist, Baron Clas von Alstromer. My flower resembles a miniature lily in a wide range of colors and patterns from white, golden yellow, and orange, to apricot, pink, red, purple, and lavender. I am the flower of friendship, and symbolic of wealth, prosperity and fortune.
I am a native of Chile, in South America. I am a winter-growing perennial, but some of my relatives from Eastern Brazil are summer-growing perennials. Through careful breeding, we can be developed into evergreen plants that flower throughout the year. All told, I currently have about 190 hybrid relatives. I am usually grown from seed, and should be planted about a foot apart from my neighbors in an area with full sun and well-drained soil. Give me some organic fertilizer and about 3 inches of organic compost, and place mulch around me but not on top of me. Keep my soil moist and I will bloom in the spring through the fall. Cut off my old flowers, and I can grow up to 36 inches tall and 24 inches wide.
Orchid My name is Paphiopedilum, but you can call me Paph. I’m part of the Orchid family. In nature, I grow among humus layers on the forest floor. I have robust shoots, each having several leaves. My leaves can be short and rounded or long and narrow, and typically have a mottled pattern. Each shoot blooms only once, when it is fully-grown. When older shoots die, newer ones take over, producing a raceme (or flowering shoot) between the fleshy, succulent leaves.
Paph are among the most widely cultivated and hybridized of all the Orchid genera. I am easy to grow indoors, as long as conditions that mimic my habitat are created. I like high humidity (50-70%), moderate to warm temperatures (13-35 degrees Celsius, 55 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit), and low light (12, 000 to 20,000 lux). My modern hybrids are easier to grow in artificial conditions than my parent species.
Geranium My name is Pelargonium. I am a relative of a perennial geranium. As a garden geranium, I am one if the most common ornamental potted plants, with over 280 varieties. My family is from southern Africa. I grow well in a mixture of peat moss and compost, and I like lots of bright light. Water me as necessary and feed me once a week using a high potash fertilizer. I am tolerant of drought and heat, but can withstand only minor frost.
I am often referred to as a Cranesbill geranium because my seedpod resembles a crane’s bill. My foliage is often toothed and is very attractive. My flowers float on top of my stems in shades of white, pink, magenta, purple and blue. I can deter mosquitoes, but I am also a delicious meal for moths and butterfly caterpillars. My roots can be used in homeopathic preparations for the treatment of respiratory infections.
